The Art of the Epithet: Titles That Turn a Name Into a Legend

Why a good epithet does more storytelling than a paragraph of description, and how the forge chooses one from temperament.

Smaug the Golden. Ancalagon the Black. The epithet is where a name becomes a legend.

Four temperaments, four shapes

The Dragon Name Generator draws epithets from four families, each with its own grammatical shape:

  • Noble — offices and crowns: Warden of the …, the … Sovereign, Keeper of …
  • Wrathful — destruction: the …bringer, Scourge of the …, Who … Unbidden
  • Cunning — secrecy: the … Whisper, Weaver of …, Thief of the …
  • Ancient — memory: Eldest of the …, the First of …, Who Remembers the …

Each element then supplies the nouns: Cinder and Ember Wastes for fire, Night and Hollow Moon for shadow.

Comma or no comma?

Epithets that begin with the or Who follow the name directly — Morvhal the Unlit. All others take a comma — Glaciorn, Warden of the Glacier Throne. The forge handles this for you when you copy a name.

Write your own

Use the forge’s epithet as a prompt, not a verdict. If Thief of the Starless Vault makes you ask what was stolen, you have just found your next plot.
