How to Pronounce Your Dragon's Name

Stress, syllables and the pronunciation guide under every forged name — so your readers and players say it the way you hear it.

A name that every reader pronounces differently is a name nobody owns. The forge prints a pronunciation guide under every result to fix that.

Reading the guide

Pronunciations look like VUL·ca·thrax: syllables are separated by a middle dot and the stressed syllable is in capitals. The Dragon Name Generator stresses the first syllable — the root — because that is where the meaning lives.

How syllables are split

The engine groups each run of vowels with the consonants before it, then hands a single trailing consonant to the syllable that owns it. That rule keeps clusters such as thr together, so you get VUL·ca·thrax and not VUL·cat·hrax.

The apostrophe

Epic names sometimes gain an apostrophe after the root — Kerav’arazul. Treat it as a short glottal pause, like the break in uh-oh. It gives very long names a place to breathe.

Test it on someone else

Say the name to a friend without spelling it, then ask them to write it down. If they come close, you have a name that will survive being read aloud at a game table or in an audiobook.
